In a bustling city of 8 million, entirely encircled by water, it's crucial that its residents foster a safe and respectful relationship with the surrounding waterways, which are integral to the city's transportation, recreation, and commerce. However, the community faces a daunting challenge: a critical shortage of lifeguards and swimming instructors, a direct consequence of the discontinuation of swimming education in schools.
This gap in water safety education has had tragic repercussions, with dozens of drownings occurring annually at city beaches, often involving individuals swimming alone without lifeguard supervision. Alarmingly, the majority of these victims are youths, predominantly 16 years old and from communities of color.
In response to this urgent need, we established a nonprofit dedicated to serving the most underserved communities and those most at risk. We provide free swimming lessons and comprehensive water safety education, aiming to cultivate a deep-seated understanding and respect for water among residents.
Furthermore, addressing the root of the problem, we have initiated a youth employment program. This innovative program not only equips participants with swimming skills and comfort in aquatic environments but also opens doors to new career opportunities within the burgeoning Blue Economy.
Our impact to date has been significant and growing: hundreds have learned to swim, and thousands have been educated about water safety. This ongoing story is a testament to our commitment to creating safer, more informed communities, aligned with our vision of integrating safety, sustainability, and opportunity.
